Polar scopes are useful for properly aligning an equatorial mount. With this type of mount, one axis, the so-called clockwise axis, must be oriented parallel to the earth's axis. This is easy to do with a polar finder.
This alignment, as precise as possible, is necessary above all for photographs with long exposure times. For purely visual observation, simply set the degree of latitude and roughly set the mount with a compass.
