The first generation Lodestar used Sony's very sensitive Exview ICX429 chip. Sony has now improved this chip again and has developed the ICX829. It offers significantly higher quantum efficiency with lower read noise.
This new "Exview 2" chip doubles Lodestar's sensitivity and thus allows guidance with stars that are one size (magnitude) fainter.
With the X2, the connection was also changed to an RJ12.

Our expert comment:
The Lodestar is currently one of the most responsive and successful autoguiders on the market. The free PHD is well suited as guide software for Windows and OS-X. There were positive comments about Linux with Linguider software. The camera is available in a color and black and white version. The black and white version is about three times more sensitive than the color variant.
