This interface cable was developed to take full advantage of HEQ5 Goto support in connection with the open EQMOD project. It also fits directly into all mounts with an RJ54 port for the remote, such as Skywatcher EQ8, AZ-EQ6, AZ-EQ5, EQ6-R, NEQ5, NEQ3 and ORION Sirius.
This interface allows a PC with a USB port to be connected to the equatorial mount instead of the hand control box. In this way, the motors of the mount are controlled directly from the PC. This enables features that were not possible before: ultra-precise goto, direct autoguiding (via ASCOM), satellite tracking, N-star alignment, synchronization, GPS support, etc...
Note: Skywatcher and Orion also sell "Goto-compatible" HEQ5 mounts (Skywatcher designation "Syntrek") that do not have the Goto hand control box. These mounts remain fully compatible with the direct USB-HEQ5 interface, as the onboard electronics and mechanics are exactly the same as the Goto models, only the hand control box is different.
Compatible software: All compatible with ASCOM, Cartes du Ciel, Astrosnap, ...

Our expert comment:
EQMOD is the name of open source software that allows you to control your mount from your PC. There are several solutions to connect the PC to the support. The EQDIR component in the name of many adapters and interfaces means that a direct connection is established from the PC to the mount, ie the hand controller is no longer required. Such a connection can even be wireless.
